Being A Board Member

An Overview of Being on the Board

This article is devoted to the experience and impact of being on the Board. NMBEA is in its 75th year as a state regulatory agency and has a long history of voluntary involvement by the architectural community and the public of New Mexico.

How often does the Board meet?
The Board normally meets once a quarter, or four times per fiscal year. Occasionally, it is necessary for the Board to have a special Board meeting, which is usually done to consider a pending enforcement case. Often these special meetings can be held telephonically to save travel time. Three of the regular Board meetings are held at the Board office in Santa Fe. One meeting each year is held at the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning in Albuquerque. How much of time will be required to be on the Board? Besides attending the Board meetings, which are one day meetings, there are committee meetings held throughout the year. Most committees meet once a quarter, with one committee meeting monthly. Some of these committee responsibilities can be accomplished through conference telephone calls.

Is there any compensation involved with being a Board member?
Yes, Board members are paid a per diem and mileage for all meetings requiring their physical presence. Board members are also reimbursed for any hotel or travel costs associated with Board business.

How long is a Board member's term of service?
Board members are appointed by the Governor to serve for a three-year term.

What are the specific requirements for serving on the Board?
As provided by the NM Architectural Act, there are a total of seven Board members. Six of these must be architects having ten or more years of experience in the profession, with five years as New Mexico registered architects. One of these six architects must be in architectural education in an accredited college of architecture. The seventh Board member is a public member. All Board members need to have been a resident of New Mexico for at least five years prior to their date of appointment. Additionally, the Board makes every effort to find representation from all areas of the state and from all aspects of the profession.

Are Board members involved in regional or national concerns?
Yes, there is an opportunity to become involved with the Western Conference of Architectural Registration Boards (WCARB), which is a regional division of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). WCARB meets once a year in March. WCARB is the largest of NCARB'S six regions, stretching from New Mexico to Alaska, and including Hawaii, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam. The NCARB meeting is held in June, with attendees from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Board members are financially supported to attend to both of these meetings.

If I am interested, how do I go about applying to be a Board member?
The first step is to notify the Board office of your interest. You can write, or telephone, the Board's Director to indicate your interest and to ask any further questions. A résumé should also accompany any request to become a Board member. All appointments to the Board are the purview of the Governor and done at the Governor's direction.
