The Intern Development Program (IDP)
IDP Participants Eligible to Defer Repayment of Student Loans
Despite restrictions imposed by the 1993 Higher Education Reauthorization Act, interns participating in the Intern Development Program (IDP) may still defer repayment of federally insured student loans.
Many lending institutions are continuing to grant deferments for loans granted after July 1, 1993 (the date the act became effective). Interns should contact their lending institutions regarding eligibility criteria and deferment forms.
Most deferment forms require two certifications. The intern’s IDP sponsor (referred to on most deferment forms as the "program official") completes one section and an official from the intern’s state registration board (referred to on most forms as the "state agency") completes another section. New Mexico requires the intern to send deferment form along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope and $5 processing fee made payable to N.M. Board of Examiners for Architects, PO Box 509, Santa Fe, NM 87504.
A period of internship of approximately three years is mandatory for professional registration as an architect in the State of New Mexico.
New Mexico Architectural Act/Rules and Regulations do not require a bachelor’s degree be earned prior to commencement of the internship. Diversified training is verified and completion is certified through the national IDP, a program of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
Please call the Board office at 505/827-6375 or e-mail: Financial if you have any questions regarding this requirement.
