A young couple, Larry and Betty Smith, want to build their first home, which their parents are giving them for a wedding present. While unclear on the specifics of the design, they know they want something very modern and different in style. They attend a lecture given by a prominent local architect, Bernice Bell. Ms. Bell's designs often incorporate long, unsupported spans and large overhangs. During the lecture Ms. Bell explains that she can accomplish the unusual look her designs have by using a unique truss system supplied by AK Structural Systems.
After the lecture the Smiths meet with Ms. Bell to discuss theirs needs in housing and to listen to her feedback for design ideas. Bell shows them many designs, one of which was created while she worked for PDQ Architecture. This design, in particular, catches the Smiths' eye. It is a 5000 square foot home, which was built for a client several states away. Bell offers to fly the Smiths to the state where the home is located and to pay for their food, lodging and car rental while they are there to see the home. The Smiths agree to Bell's offer and make the trip.
Upon their return, the Smiths meet with Bell again and sign a contract for her to build a similar style home to the one they saw, but at an increased size of 7000 square feet. Bell has a drafting company in Taiwan with whom she has a contract for creating drawings and specifications and sends them her request for plans for the home for the Smiths.
Bell tells the Smiths that she knows a quality realtor who can find just the right spot for their home. The Smiths work with this realtor and, indeed, do find a good location for their home. After the sale of the property the realtor sends Bell a check for $1000 for recommending the realtor to the Smiths.
Meanwhile, the company in Taiwan has generated the drawings and sent them to Bell for her seal and signature. Bell them submits the plans to the local building authority for permitting. After the permit has been granted the building of the new house begins. The truss system is supplied by AK Structural Systems. After the house is completed AK sends Bell a check for $2000 in appreciation for using their trusses. The Smiths get their house done on time and are very happy with the results.
