A New Mexico registered architect, Joe Gnatter, is meeting with clients who are interested in building a large commercial venture in his city. The clients are new to the practice of architecture and construction and ask Joe to give them an overview of what his involvement and responsibilities would be if he were the architect they chose.
Mr. Gnatter explains that, of course, his primary concern would be to deliver to the clients a design and plans that meet all their needs. This would include preparing alternative preliminary design concepts, as well as actual models to depict design concepts. He goes on to add that, while he will be able to express an educated opinion as to the probable costs of the project, the ultimate responsibility for evaluating the proposed costs for accuracy and fairness would be up to the clients and their business accountants.
The clients are also curious about possible environmental and social impacts their project might have, and any code implications these two concerns might engender. Gnatter tells them that he will ensure the project meets all local code requirements and says that the environmental and social impacts will be the concern of the project's engineer.
The next item of concern for the clients has to do with the administration of the project. Gnatter agrees to be responsible for construction administration on the project, and tells the clients he will evaluate all bids received. He also agrees to be the overall project manager and defines this as basically making sure everything gets done on time.
